Meet our artist for August- Evan Paul English! @evanpaulenglish
Originally from Boise, Idaho, Evan earned his BFA from the University of Arizona in 2013 and his MFA from Pratt Institute in 2016. He currently lives and works in Kingston, New York.
Evan's practice is rooted in his experience growing up queer in Idaho, where domestic spaces often carried tension between appearance and reality. The home, typically imagined as a place of safety, can be fraught with turmoil, where identity is negotiated in subtle and hidden ways. Floral imagery has become a central visual language in this investigation. Historically associated with decoration and easily overlooked, in his work they operate as symbols of personal and political expression. By isolating, magnifying, and interpreting these motifs, he examines how the environment from which they stem shapes our perception of gender and class in America.
